"So, I'm not sure if this allowed or not but I thought I would try because I want to see my friend and her loving cat spend more time together.

This is my friend Stanley. He moved in a few years ago with his "brother" Drake, a miniature schnauzer, and his "mom" Elisa. When I met him, he poured out of this little carrier and had to be the biggest cat I'd ever seen. Huge. Bigger than both my dogs put together. He's very svelt now, though. A little less food a lot of careening throught the house and wreaking havoc will do wonders to the figure. Appropriately, his middle name is M. He is a man of mystery and mischief. Just when you think you're at the brink of insanity because the little devil has jumped at you from behind a door and taken a bit of an ankle, he melts your murderous thoughts by attacking his own tail with the same ferocity. He pays fetch like a dog, better than my dogs, really. He loves shoeboxes. He'll squeeze himsely into one, then chew it to bits. He's learned I'm easier to get out of bed than Elisa, so he runs into my room and gives me a fierce ear-cleaning and a tap on the nose to get me moving. And he snuggles with complete abandon and trust.

Stanley went to the vet last week. His new food wasn't agreeing with him, so Elisa just wanted to get him checked out to make sure everything was okay. It's a long explanation, but basically he has kidney stones and due to a bunch of unlucky circumstances he is in kidney failure. The hospital tried medical therapy, but this was unsuccessful. Elisa was given two options; a surgery that is risky but has a good prognosis, or to take him home and make him comfortable.

Remember Drake, Stanley's doggy brother? Last year he was diagnosed wth an aggressive cancer. He lost a leg, but not momentum, and endured chemotherapy week after week patiently. Drake was the only one who wasn't worried about being sick. He loved the vet, and three-legged dogs get more attention, so all the better for him. Drake's little body couldn't keep up with his plucky little spirit and he succumbed to his battle with cancer in October. He was only 10 years old, and he left behind a lot of broken hearts.

Unfortunately his treatments left a lot of bills as well. What are the chances that within months your other furry child would be back at the same hospital you thought you'd seen the last of? Who knew that with so little symptoms, kidney stones could prove to be possibly fatal? And how do you make an impossible choice between a surgery you can't afford and watching someone you love in pain and not do anything? For many people, a cat is just a pet, and can be replaced. There are are situations more dire. I do not dispute this, but Stanley is part of our family and we want to help him in any way we can. So it's been a week of researching charities and scrounging under couch cushions. If this surgery gives him a good chance, it's worth trying. He's only 5 years old, he has a lot more mischief in him.

Please keep Elisa in your thoughts and prayers. It's hard to watch such a good friend go through such a hard year. If you would like to see Stanley's fundraising page, go to wishuponahero.com. I just did a search for Stanley.

I know that times are tough for everyone right now, but if there's any way you can help Stanley & his mom, Elisa, please donate.
